Heidi Seary has worked for 30 years in the charitable and environmental sectors with a wealth of experience working for both public and third sector organisations. Her last job was for the UK charity
Social Farms & Gardens as the Operations Manager where she worked for 14 years. During that time she developed the European accredited training course Gardeniser with European partners in Italy, France, Austria and Poland which is aimed at up-skilling managers and key staff at community gardens. Heidi has a wealth of contacts with community gardens across the UK and Europe and has previously started her own Community Interest Company Growingconnections.org.uk
Kate White Is the former owner of The Greenhouse Cafe, Felixstowe’s much loved plant-based cafe. In 2018 she decided it was time to nudge Felixstowe to embrace more sustainable, ethical and greener ways of eating and drinking and set up the business which grew to be a well known and loved part of the town. Having had very much of a 'portfolio career' including libraries, education, admin and training she wanted to take plant-based a stage further! Kate is an enthusiastic (but very amateur) gardener having taken on a small allotment a few years ago she is keen to learn and share organic/veganic and sustainable gardening techniques. Kate has also been involved in planning various local events including Felixstowe’s ‘WAMfest’ and likes to get stuck into interesting projects that enhance our wonderful town!
A chance conversation between Heidi and Kate at a bookgroup in 2023 led to the formation of Edible Felixstowe CIC in the winter of 2024; a community group who's aim is to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs all over our town. We took our lead from the global Incredible Edible initiative where anything produced in the beds and planters in the town is accessible to anyone in the community to pick and use. With the backing of Felixstowe Town Council and East Suffolk Council and having obtained a couple of local grants, we successfully launched our project at the Love Green Felixstowe event on April 20th 2024 when the Mayor, Seamus Bennett planted lavender at the centre of the Christmas Tree circle near the Triangle. We then created a herb wheel in this unused area which has already produced lots of herbs, picked by many passers-by!
Felixstowe Town Council allowed us to take over the blue planters on the ends of the pedestrianised area of Hamilton Road where we planted veg, fruit and edible flowers which are still going strong! We also planted vegetables in the area on the corner of the library building on Crescent Road
Many small businesses in the town jumped on board and wanted planters outside their shops to enhance the town and provide a talking point for customers
